Storms can wreak havoc of all sorts. Many damages resulting from storms might be manageable on your own, but some may pose a challenge.

Tree stumps come in various sizes, as do uprooted stumps. If you’ve ever attempted to remove an uprooted stump, you may have found that even the smaller ones can appear nearly impossible to extract. This could be due to a persistent root beneath the stump that you can’t seem to cut, anchoring it in place. Tree roots support the tree and are remarkably strong.

The bigger the stump the harder it is to remove. Not only do you have the hidden roots holding it in place but you also have compacted dirt stuck to the bottom of the stump, making it extremely heavy.

How to Remove an Up-Rooted Stump

You might consider tackling this task yourself: Start by developing a solid plan, as what works for one stump may not necessarily be effective for another.

Exercise caution; the stump could unexpectedly shift upward or topple over without warning!

This can be very labor-intensive work.

You'll need to eliminate all the roots from the stump to reduce its weight. Before doing so, it's essential to clear away all the compacted soil from the base. Keep in mind that there may be rocks embedded in the dirt as well. A mattock or pickaxe may be useful for this part of the process. Since it can be strenuous work, enlisting the help of several people is advisable.

Remember that you must sever the root located beneath the stump before it will loosen from the ground and become free. While this may sound straightforward, it can prove to be more challenging, especially with larger stumps.

Pulling the stump out of the ground

This may seem straightforward... However, it can prove more challenging than it appears. The smaller the stump, the better your chances of successfully removing it from the ground.

Exercise extreme caution, as many things can go awry when using this technique!

The rope may snap under strain, potentially sending the end hurtling towards you. Additionally, the stump could dislodge with considerable force, posing a threat to you or those nearby. There are numerous risks associated with this method. I recommend against attempting to pull one from the ground unless you are well-informed and equipped with the proper tools to do so.

exercise caution, as you will be operating heavy machinery and must be knowledgeable about its proper use. Be mindful that the stump could unexpectedly break loose and either tip over or potentially attempt to up-right itself at any moment.

There are various methods for grinding an uprooted stump. Nevertheless, every uprooted stump presents its own distinct challenges, making it clear that there is no singular correct way to handle an uprooted stump apart from relying on experience and thorough planning.

           Hiring a professional

If you aren't the do-it-yourself type (or even if you are), taking on this task alone may prove to be more challenging than you anticipated. There are numerous professional stump grinding companies available. Your main priority now is to find one you can trust to handle the job. The primary drawback of this option is the cost; as with many services, the more extensive the work, the higher the price. The same applies to stump grinding. You could choose to have the stump ground and leave the grindings behind, which is the least expensive option. Alternatively, you might opt for stump grinding with all the grindings removed, which could be twice the cost of just the grinding alone. Whichever route you choose, hiring a professional is undoubtedly the safest way to deal with storm-damaged, uprooted stumps.

Removing a tree stump can be a challenging task, but there are several effective methods you can consider. Let’s explore some ways to remove a stump. I am partial to hiring a professional stump grinder, but there are other options for those who don't want to go that route.

Allow the Stump to Rot Naturally:

This approach is low effort yet demands patience. Allow the stump to naturally decompose over time. The process may span several years, influenced by the stump's type and size.

Cut off as much of the top of the stump as possible with a chainsaw.

Using a 1-inch spade bit, drill holes evenly spaced around the stump's perimeter to a depth of approximately 12 inches.

Insert tree stump removal granules into the drilled holes and saturate with water. Allow 4 to 6 weeks for the chemicals to expedite the decomposition process.

Once the stump becomes soft and spongey, break out the rotten wood with a sharpened felling ax

            .

Repeat until all the stump remains are completely gone.

           Dig Out the Stump Manually:

This method involves lots of physical labor but is cost-effective.

Dig around the stump to expose the roots.

Use a shovel to cut away the roots and gradually loosen the stump from the ground.

Pull the stump out once it’s loose enough.

           Use a Stump Grinder:

Renting a power stump grinder can expedite the stump removal process. This machine grinds the wood into small chips, simplifying the removal.

           Burn the Stump:

Pour lighter fluid or fuel oil (never gasoline) into the holes drilled in the stump.

Wait until the liquid penetrates the wood (this could take a few weeks).

Drop a match into the holes to start the burning process.

The stump will continue to smolder for days, ultimately resulting in a hole filled with charcoal. It is crucial to take safety precautions throughout this process. be sure you follow all state and local laws regarding open burning.

           Regrade the Area:

After removing a stump, it's important to regrade the area to even it out, making it ready for landscaping or planting. It's essential to select a removal method that aligns with your needs, whether that's a natural process, manual labor, or the use of machinery. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages, so weigh considerations such as cost, time, and safety when making your decision on how to remove a tree stump.

Everyone desires an attractive yard, but occasionally you may end up with a stump in it. Whether it's a stump you inherited with your home purchase, a recently cut tree, or roots that are causing problems in your yard. Perhaps you wish to expand your flower garden and need to remove a tree to create space. While it might seem feasible to tackle this yourself, often, this task is better left to professionals.

Felling a tree and stump removal will actually require:

           - A qualified tree service professional to determine when and how this should be done

           - Qualified tree surgeons to remove the tree limb by limb in small sections to prevent damage the surrounding structures and minimize the impact area around the tree.

           - All the right equipment maintained to the correct standards.

           - Years of experience and knowledge to ensure no one gets injured.

           - The proper stump grinder and one that will have minimal impact on your landscaping.

Things not to do after cutting a tree

Don't leave a stump after removing the tree.

It's generally advisable to remove a tree stump when you cut down the tree. Stumps can pose a tripping hazard, and individuals unaware of their presence could suffer injuries. Moreover, a stump left to decay can attract insects and fungi, potentially spreading to other healthy trees. Additionally, there's a risk of termites from the decaying stump moving to your home, leading to expensive damage.

Don't apply stump killer in spring or early summer when the sap is rising.

Stump killer is effective; it delivers on its promise to halt new growth and accelerate the decomposition process. However, it requires patience as it works gradually. Opting for this long-term solution means preparing for insects, and it may take several years for the stump to completely decompose.

Ways to remove a tree stump

Tree stump removal is typically achieved through one of three methods: applying stump killer chemicals, extracting it by digging and using a winch, or employing a stump grinder.

            -Stump Killer.

As suggested, the chemical should be applied to stumps during autumn and winter. It is crucial to adhere strictly to the manufacturer's instructions due to the hazardous nature of the chemicals. The application should be directly on the stump, and only on living (recently cut) stumps, as it is ineffective on dead ones. To prevent chemical leaching into other garden areas and to protect birds, animals, and children from contamination, the stump must be covered after application.

            -Digging it out.

This method is only suitable for smaller stumps. Ensure there's no risk of damaging surrounding trees or property. Ample space is required to attach a winch if you're using one. If you opt for this method, familiarize yourself with the equipment to prevent injury to yourself or others. Additionally, sever any large roots before winching to minimize strain on the equipment and to prevent excessive disruption of the ground.

            -Stump grinding.

Our preferred method of stump removal is effective for both recently cut trees and stumps that have been present for years. It's a swift process, allowing you to proceed with your yard improvements or other projects. However, safety should be a priority. Maneuvering heavy grinding equipment into position can be challenging, whether it's down the side of a property or through your neighbor's garden when there's no alternative access. When operating the grinder, it's crucial to wear appropriate safety gear, including gloves, eye and hearing protection, sturdy boots, and durable long pants at a minimum.

Tree stump removal DANGER

            When using a stump grinder

always steer clear of the blades and the cutting side of the grinder when the machine is running (those things are designed to cut through tree stumps, so imagine what they’d do to your legs). Remove all stones and rocks from around the grinding area as they are likely to be thrown up at great speeds and could cause damage or injury.

            Stump killer is essentially poison

so if you’re considering using this at all you must consider children and wildlife and securely cover the stump after applying the chemical.

the gift that just keeps on giving! A left stump will usually attract fungus. As a stump dies and rots it creates the perfect breeding ground for the stuff and once it takes hold it could well spread to other trees, compromising their health.

When you need a tree or stump removed, it's important to understand the process, its necessity, and the duration of the task. A qualified team of arborists or tree surgeons can guide you through the steps, allowing you to inform your family and neighbors, and arrange sufficient parking space for the vehicles that will remove the debris generated by the work.

          Improving Curb Appeal

There are many reasons to improve curb appeal. Some people may be interested in a new look, and change the landscaping. Others are thinking about selling their house and wanting to make it more attractive. While others realize they need to do something to keep their yard from being the eyesore in the neighborhood.

           Stumps Are Often Overlooked

Sometimes something small is all it takes to make a big difference, but it is overlooked because you just don't think about it or know there is a way to get it done. I am talking about stumps. They are simple and often overlooked. In some cases people don't want them but have no idea of how to go about getting rid of them.

Something Small Can Make A Big

            Difference

If your looking to have a new look you may have to do something bigger like repaint your house or change your landscaping, but not always. If a stump is in your yard, removing the stump gives you more usable landscape and opens your yard up to more possibilities.

Someone looking to purchase a house may find the perfect house but something about the appearance outside is just no quite right, and they can't figure it out. If the stump had been removed before it went on the market it may improve not only the chance of it selling quickly but may increase to property value.

Never Pay Before The Service Is Finished

Paying for services up-front

One important thing some people don't think about is when to pay......before or after?

          Paying For Services in Advance

There are some services you pay for in advance, for example you may put down 1/3 if you're having a deck built. On the other hand, you should never be expected to pay up front for a service that supplies are not needing to be purchased in order to complete the service. Tree service and stump grinding is one such service that you should not pay for in advance.

Paying After the Service Is Complete

You don't have to worry about the person offering the service to run off with your money if you wait till, they have finished. I have had to finish many jobs both trees and stumps, because the homeowner decided to pay upfront before the service was complete, only to find out the person decided to leave early and never come back. I have been offered money upfront and always tell the customer I don't need to be paid until I finish.

          Stories

Customers have told me the following: "The guys left for lunch and said they would be back, but it's been 3 weeks and I still can't get in-touch with them." Another "I had to leave to go somewhere and decided to pay them because I would not be back before they finished". Only to find that they left shortly after the homeowner left and never showed up or answered phone calls). Another one "They told me the equipment broke and they would be back tomorrow to finish everything but needed the money so they could fix the equipment so they could finish". Only to find out they were scammed, and they never returned or answered phone calls.

          The Ugly Truth

We like to think that everyone we meet is an honest person...but the ugly fact is not everyone is honest. If you decide to pay for a service like tree service or stump grinding up front you may be left paying someone else to finish what someone else started, and it may cost more than the original person quoted. Some people will under-bid then pressure you into paying up-front only to leave you with the job half done.

           In The End

I hate having to quote a job that someone else has skipped out on and scammed the homeowner. I feel bad for them, but I also know that I have to feed my family and keep my equipment in good working order. It's a bad situation all the way around. Please do yourself a favor and don't risk getting into that situation. Never pay for tree service or stump grinding services up front.

No Need To Dig Your Stumps Out, We Can Help!

Thinking about digging out your stump?

We understand some people just want to do things on their own, without help from others. That is how I am. We sometimes find out towards the end its better to get a professional to do the job.

          I Have Been There Myself

I have taken on projects that I should have hired a pro to do. Sometimes they turn out just fine, or I may learn a new talent in the process of trial and error. Other times I have jumped in over my head and realized I have taken on way more than I should have. There is nothing wrong with admitting you have gotten in over your head and need help.

          Stumps Can Be Deceiving

Small stumps may look like they will be simple to dig up, and some may be. Most stumps have a very intricate root system, making them very difficult to dig up. If your lucky you may spend only a few hours and if not so lucky it may take several days or longer. After you get the stump dug out what are you going to do with it...

          Admit Defeat

I have been hired lots of time to grind stumps that someone has tried to dig up. Sometimes they have dug most of their yard up trying to get the stump out, only to discover they took on way more than expected. There comes a point when your realize "I am getting nowhere" and you have to throw in the white flag of defeat.

          Think Positively

We all make bad decisions from time to time, but trying to dig the stump up on your on may not have been all bad. If it had worked out you would have saved yourself some money. Even though things may not have worked out as planned you did get plenty of exercise in the process and to be truthful it was probably fun at first. If you were successful in digging the stump up you accomplished something few would attempt and congratulations.

Have you ever thought about burning your stump out? This sound like a great idea...or does it?

How To Burn a Stump Out

Unfortunately, I am not going to tell you how to burn a stump Out because I have never been successful at doing it. There are lots of YouTube videos that go into great detail on how to burn your stump out, and I have watched several of them.

          Things To Consider

You will want to check with state and local laws regarding burning laws. In some areas it is illegal to burn anything. Burning your stump out is a very timely process and you will need to supervise the fire the entire time. Fire burns up not down, so it is very hard to get the stump to burn below ground level. Smoke....It is a very smokey process, because the stump will be smoldering most of the time (don't want to make the neighbors mad).

          Make A Fire Pit

You could make it into a fire pit. Keep throwing firewood on the stump to keep it burning. As you are enjoying time outside setting around the fire you can be getting rid of the stump a little at a time. I am not saying this will work, just an idea.

          My Experience

I have been called to look at lots of stumps that people have tried to burn out but have not been successful. I find that most burn to ground level if lucky. The homeowner then discovers they cannot grow grass over where the stump was at. After burning a stump, it sucks the moister out of the stump making it very hard to grind.

           End Result

If you were successful burning the stump out.... well done! If you tried to burn the stump out but were not so lucky, we are here to help you with that pesky stump. Request your free written quote and we will be happy to check it out for you. We offer a no pressure no obligation written quote, and as always you never pay until we have finished the job.
